Looking to Critique

I'm currently writing...

I’m writing a young adult sci-fi romance based in the modern day. The story is told from one male (18 years old) and one female (18 years old) POV. It is about people who have supernatural powers, two of whom end up falling in love in an unlikely place, secluded from the rest of the world–an underground sanctuary for people with powers.

What is your writing experience?

I’ve been writing since November of last year and just finished my first novel of a three book series. I plan to self-publish, but I will use a publisher at some point if they offer advertising (which is unlikely, of course). I write anywhere from a few thousand words to 50, 000 words in a week, but I only write that quickly on occasion. I write for fun, but I am also pursuing it as a career. I am no yet published.

My writing influences are...

I like Michael Crighton’s books, as well as Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series. I enjoy Dan Brown’s books as well, even though I don’t agree with them. I am a big moviegoer. I really wouldn’t know how to describe my writing style. I like writing in the modern setting, but I wouldn’t mind trying my hand, at some point, at writing some fantasy set in a medieval-like realm. I’m pretty good at editing, from what I’m told. I haven’t done it a ton, but my wife does it as part of her job and she’s taught me a lot.

Books I enjoy reading

I enjoyed the Twilight series, thought I admit that Stephanie Meyers isn’t the best writer. I would’ve marked her books up quite a bit if I had to edit them. But she does a good job of making you care about the characters. My wife and I are reading The Hunger Games trilogy right now and they’re decent, though I don’t care for first-person present. I prefer first-person past or third-person past.

More About Me

I like love stories with action, adventure and sci-fi intermixed. Mystery and suspense are fun, as well. I try to mix as many of these as I can in my storylines as long as they’ll fit properly. I am pretty decent at line-by-line critiques. My wife has to do it as part of her job, from time to time, and she’s very good at it, so I’ve learned quite a bit from her as well as a friend who’s a writing teacher, and some good books on the subjects of what not to do in writing.

I’ve read quite a bit in my life and have a good feel for it. I’ve studied a lot of science and theology, so I have a good working understanding of those subjects. I like cars and racing, so it’s fun to incorporate that into scenes periodically if it will fit properly and add to the action.

I’m 32 and have been married for 5 years. I have an 18 month old son. My wife is a PhD in cognitive neuroscience who helps kids with traumatic brain injury.
