I have a first draft of a contemporary YA that I had put aside for a month or so in order to get some distance from it… and then just as I was planning to dive deep into revisions, I got pregnant and didn’t have the energy to move once I got home from work and got my kids in bed, let alone think through plotting problems. So in the meantime I’m doing a lot of research that I’ll use in my revisions to add depth to the characters and places.
The basic plot of the story centers on a girl who’s always blended into the background at school, mostly by choice, and can’t wait to get out of the small town she’s lived in her whole life. When a new boy shows up in class one morning and not only notices her but seems to want to get to know her, she’s surprised that she’s willing to tell him the secrets she’s been keeping from so many people for so long. But he has secrets of his own, and when those secrets catch up to him, it puts them both in danger.
