I do not consider myself experienced in critiquing–I’ve been in a couple of local groups (10 p max, monthly) but have never tried to critique a whole novel. I know I sensitive to things the author usually doesn’t see–unclear pronoun referents, who’s talking here, why is this person behaving this way–because when I go back over my own work after being away for a while that’s what’s likely to catch my eye. (Also what annoys me most when I’m reading.) And I agree with everything that’s been said about balanced critiquing. What do I like as well as dislike. But it’s the author’s story.
