Since we started talking about chick-lit settings under the “What is your chick lit book about?” topic in this forum, I thought I’d open up the discussion here as well: Where did you choose to set your book? Did you set your novel close to home, or do your characters live in a more fantastic place and time? How much research did you have to do to establish your setting? And how much of a role does your setting play in establishing the themes, characters, and mood of your story?

My paranormal romance that’s currently on submission is mainly set in a fictional small city, Cameron City, OH. A few scenes are in a fictional part of Indianapolis.

The one I’m working on now, same series, is set in Indianapolis, a fictional part of Louisville, KY, and a fictional rural community, Drake Hollow, KY.

Setting plays a larger part in my WIP than it has in any of my others. Drake Hollow is a community made up exclusively of weredragons, where they don’t have to hide what they are.

On a smaller scale, I use setting, on a scene by scene basis, almost as another character, with minimal description.
