Hello! I write YA and adult novels (mostly YA), some short stories and some poetry. Within both novel categories I tend to write literary fiction, often set in the past; on occasion I write contemporary stuff, and I’ve also just made my first foray into fantasy, which I thought I’d never do. I’ve written a bunch of novels, most of which are pretty horrible, but I’m actively querying agents for my literary YA novel, Taking the Monon North, about a teenage boy dealing with a disabled brother, a rebellious brother, an alcoholic father, and an oppressive small town in 1947.
I enjoy exploring friendships and family relationships, especially between men/boys; think The Outsiders, Tex, and As I Lay Dying. I love S. E. Hinton, William Faulkner, and J. D. Salinger. I am a Christian and Christ is a huge part of my writing (and entire) life, but this does not limit what I write.
I love stream-of-consciousness, first-person narratives, free indirect discourse, narratives that play with chronology and time (e.g. The Sound and the Fury), and exploring the line between friendship and whatever lies between friendship and romance (think queerplatonic life partners). I’m not a huge fan of romance, horror, or sci-fi (unless there are some great relationships), and I prefer fiction that focuses on relationships and people–in whatever context.
In a more general sense I love the TV shows Starsky and Hutch, Supernatural, I Spy, The Professionals, and Hawaii Five-O, because of the male relationships in them; and Cagney and Lacey, because of the strong relationship between the two leading females.
On a more personal note, I love history; collecting vintage high school yearbooks (great inspiration for writing!); looking at maps; Tulsa, Oklahoma; animals; and music, in particular classic and modern rock, alternative rock, and oldies. I’d love to get to know you.
